An older man, Dr. Jennings, is walking along down a sidewalk when he receives a call on his cell phone. There are odd visions of himself holding a gun. He says "All right", and hangs up. A bus with a logo drives by. The man walks into a store and heads for the gun counter. He asks to see a gun, and the clerk, Dennis, gives him the one he asks for. They talk about what kind of shells it uses, and the clerk shows him. As the clerk offers to take him hunting, the doctor loads the gun saying guns freak him out. The panicked clerk tells him he cannot load the gun on the premises, but the doctor assures Dennis everything will be okay before he shoots Dennis. Everyone in the store is screaming. The doctor once again assures them it is all okay, and then he shoots himself in the head. Flashes of white, as Sam comes back to himself. It was a vision.

Sam convinces Dean to go to the Roadhouse for Ash to help them know where his premonition was. They know the premonitions always has a connection with the demon, but Dean is not so sure that announcing Sam's freakish demonic connection is a good thing with hunters. Sam worries about being a freak now, but Dean tells him that he has always been a freak.

At the Roadhouse, Jo is busy hustling another hunter, Ed, by playing an arcade hunting game. Afterwards Ellen informs him he was hustled. The boys walk in. Jo and Dean small talk, while Sam heads for Ash's room. Dean reluctantly follows Sam, with an apology to Jo. Sam is trying to get Ash to come out with no luck; Dean manages to get a naked "Dr. Badass" to come to the door and agree to help them.

After properly clothed, Ash is on his laptop, and found the Blue Ridge busline in Guthrie, Oklahoma. After having Ash checking for demonic signs or omens and coming up blank, Sam asks him to search Guthrie for a house fire in 1983 in a baby's nursery, on the night of the baby's six month birthday, promising a beer as a reward.

As the boys wait, Jo plays REO's "Can't Fight This Feeling" on the jukebox. She and Dean banter, before she asks about Sam's nursery fire and offers help. Dean turns her down, stating he is afraid of her mother Ellen. Sam grabs the information Ash delivered, and they leave, much to Jo's disappointment.

Dean is singing in the car as they drive, until Sam calls him on it, and they get down to business. Ash found that Andrew Gallagher, born in '83, lost his mother in a fire when he was six months old, in a close parallel to Sam's own history. Dean wonders if the Demon killed Andrew's mom, and Sam thinks so. Dean asks how Sam knew to look for this guy. Sam's premonitions have been about the demon or one of the kids the demon came after, like Max Miller, who killed people. Sam thinks Gallagher is killing, but no current way of finding him. They will start with a work address from a year ago.

The cafe owner, Tracy, is very helpful. She tells them they will not get any debt collecting out of Andy. The Winchesters assure Tracy they were lawyers representing his Great Aunt Leta who passed with a sizable estate. She tells them he lives in a van on Orchard Street with a barbarian queen painted on the side. One of the busboys, Webber, comes by to tell them Andy kicks ass - got him backstage at Aerosmith.

They find the van, and stake it out. Dean starts to like this dude, but Sam has problems. Demon came to these kids, and now they are killing people. Sam is one of them, and with the plans the demon has for kids like Sam, perhaps they are supposed to be killers. Dean scoffs at the idea of Sam killing with his mind - he is not a killer. Sam counters that he kills all kinds of things. Dean claims there is a difference. Andy exits a building, blowing a kiss to a woman in a window. As the brothers watch, he stops a man, talks with him, and walks away with his coffee. Further along, Andy greets Dr. Jennings. Sam identifies the doctor as the shooter, and they split up - Sam following the shooter, while Dean sticks with Andy. Sam climbs out of Baby.

Andy takes off in his van with Dean following in the Impala. A few minutes later, the van stops and Andy comes back to talk with Dean. They talk about how great the car is, before Andy asks if he can have it - with his voice sounding odd. Dean gladly hands over Baby, and watches confused as Andy drives off.

Sam watches as his vision starts happening, and reaches the store first. He pulls the burglar alarm, keeping the doctor out. Stepping out to the street, Sam is shocked to see Andy driving by in the Impala, talking on his cell. Dr. Jennings receives another call. Sam calls Dean, telling him that Andy is driving the Impala! Dean informs Sam that Andy mind-controlled him. Sam turns to see Dr. Jennings walking in front of a bus, which hits him at full speed.

Paramedics are taking the body away, while Sam and Dean are nearby. Sam is upset; he thought he had saved the doctor.

Andy walks into the diner, ignoring Webber and heading straight for Tracy, upset. He tells her that Dr. Jennings is dead, and he wanted to see her. She is glad he is there because she missed him, and she tells him about the guys there that morning looking for him.

Dean and Sam find the Impala parked at the side of the road. Dean is so glad to see Baby again, and promises never to leave her. Thankfully, the keys were left in it. They talk about Andy; he has to use verbal commands to work his mojo. Sam says the doc had just got off his phone when he walked in front of the bus, so Andy must have called him, but Dean is not convinced Andy is their guy. After thinking for a moment, Dean figures a way to track Andy down.

They track down Andy's van again, and open the back to look inside. A disco ball, fur rugs, a tiger painted on the wall, thick books, and an enormous bong greet the brothers. Dean does not believe it is a serial killer's lair, picking up Moby Dick's bong. Sam flips through the books; it is some pretty heavy reading.

The boys are back sitting in the Impala - Sam is reading some papers and Dean is eating lunch, staking out Andy's van. Dean wishes for food he did not have to microwave at a minimart, as he wraps the foil in a ball and tosses it into the back seat. Sam does not understand Andy's motive to kill the doctor. Dean still maintains it might not be Andy; however, Sam points out the doctor was mind-controlled in front of a bus. It seems Dean is bending over backwards to defend Andy. Just then Andy comes to Sam's window and asks why they are following him. Sam starts to say they are lawyers, but Andy demands the truth with his mind control. Sam tries to continue with their lawyer story, but Dean suddenly opens up with the truth. They hunt demons, spirits, things that your worst nightmares would not touch. That Sam is his brother. Sam, looking at Dean in shock, tells Dean to shut up, but he cannot. Dean continues talking. "He's psychic. Kind of like you. Well, not really like you, but see, he thinks you're a murderer, and he's afraid that he's going to become one himself, 'cause you're all part of something that's terrible. And, I hope to hell that he's wrong, but I'm starting to get a little scared that he might be right." Andy freaks out, commands them to leave him alone, and he walks away. Dean agrees with Andy, cringing down in his seat with his hand on his head. Sam gets out of the car and follows him, because he is immune to Andy's power. Andy tells Sam to leave him alone, but Sam starts interrogating him about what the power is, when it started, and the fact that his mom died in a fire. Dean climbs out, but Sam holds up a hand to prevent Dean coming close. Sam tells Andy they are connected. Andy freaks again, trying to command Sam to leave when Sam demands why Andy killed the doc. As Andy denies it, another vision slams into Sam.

A woman is at a gas station, filling up her car, when her cell phone rings and she answers it. After agreeing to do it, she drenches herself with gas. An employee notices and calls for her to stop. She says it is going to be okay, sets herself on fire, and calmly lays down.

Dean sees Sam having a vision and runs up to help him. Haltingly, Sam gives him the details - a woman burning herself alive at a gas station, and she was triggered by a call. Sam is not sure when this happens, but determines not to let Andy out of his sight. They hear sirens coming; a fire truck passes by. Sam tells Dean to go and see what is going on, and Sam stays with Andy.

Dean calls Sam; woman is dead, just as in Sam's vision. Unfortunately, it happened minutes before, so he could not stop her. However, Sam was with Andy when it happened, so there is somebody else doing this. He will dig around, see what else he can find.

Sam and Andy are talking about Sam's premonitions, and Andy's mind thing - it was a gift. When Sam asked why Andy did not have everything he wanted, Andy replies he has everything he needs. Sam realizes Andy is not a killer, and has hope for both of them. Dean returns with information - victim's name was Holly Beckett, 41, single. He called Ash on the way over. Holly gave birth back in '83 on the same day that Andy was born. Sam asks him if he was adopted; Andy says yes. He never knew his birth parents. Dean says he tried to find out but the only hard copy is sealed in the county office. "Screw that," says Andy.

Andy is mind controlling the security officer to go get a coffee, and the man leaves. Andy makes a joke about the force - not the droids you are looking for - and Dean thinks Andy is awesome. Sam finds that Holly Beckett was Andy's mother, and Dr. Jennings was her doctor and oversaw her adoption. Andy reiterates he did not kill them; Dean reassures Andy they believe him, but that leaves the question of - who did? Sam has a pretty good guess. Holly Beckett gave birth to twins. Holly put both of them up for adoption. Andy went to the Gallagher family, and his brother's name was Ansem Weems with a local address. Dean pulls a picture of him from DMV, then he shows Andy.

Webber walks up to Tracy, and starts asking questions. He says he knows that Andy and her used to go out, and he wonders if they ever had anything serious. It seems like something is still there. She says no, but he commands her to tell the truth.

Back in Baby, Sam asks Andy for everything he knows about Webber. Andy tells them that he showed up about eight months ago, and acted weird, trying too hard to be his friend. As Dean wonders why he did not just tell him the truth, Sam starts getting another vision. Tracy walks to the edge of a high dam. After glancing back, she spreads her arms and leaps. Sam is holding his head, and trying to climb out of the car. Dean stops the car, and races around to grab Sam's shoulders.

Webber drives onto the dam and stops with Tracy in the car with him. He tells her seductive things, but she just wants to go home. He commands her to stop crying, and she stops. Webber tells her that he knows what she sees in Andy, but he is Webber's family, not hers, and she cannot have him. She will not have anything, after tonight.

Near the dam, Sam and Dean get out of the car, and Dean opens the trunk. Sam tells Dean to stay back, and Dean agrees - he has had his head screwed with enough for one day. Andy wants to come, because Tracy is up there.

Webber has commanded Tracy to disrobe, slow. He commands her after they are done, she is to fly off the dam and if she is scared, to say everything is okay. Sam breaks Webber's window, demanding him to get out. Webber tries to command Sam, but Sam backhands Webber to keep him quiet while Andy pulls Tracy out. Sam pulls Webber out on the ground, telling him not to move, when Andy and Sam get into an argument on who will handle Webber. Tracy, being mind controlled by Webber, hits Sam, knocking him unconscious. Andy commands her to stop it; she backs away terrified. Andy and Webber talk. Webber has practiced, and sometimes does not need words, but a headache is the cost. Andy grabs him. Webber tells Andy to back off, or Tracy will go flying. Andy realizes Webber will kill her, and backs off, asking for Tracy not to be hurt. He tells Andy that Tracy is coming between them, that the world is all garbage, they can push for whatever they want. Andy wonders if his brother is stupid; you do not kill people. Webber has wanted to tell Andy, but the yellow-eyed man came to him in his dreams telling him not to tell Andy yet, that they were special, that he had big plans for Webber and Andy, that Webber had a twin.

Dean is sneaking in the woods with a sniper rifle, finding a spot to aim to the dam.

Andy demands to know why Webber killed their mother and the doctor, and he responds that they ruined Andy and Webber's lives. He could not allow them to get away with it.

Dean crouches, and lines up the shot on Webber.

Webber senses something, turns around, and commands Dean to kill himself.

Dean pulls his rifle around, aiming it under his chin.

A shot goes off. Webber jerks, then falls on the ground; Andy is holding a gun.

The next day Andy is talking with the police, commanding them that Anson shot himself, and they saw it happen. Sam notes to Dean that Andy is getting better. Walking past Tracy, Andy notes she is scared of him now, refusing to even look at him, because he had used his mind trick on her. Andy meets Sam and Dean to figure out what to do next. Sam tells him that they have to leave, but he gives Andy his cell number to call him if anything comes up. Andy, feeling lost, asks what he is supposed to do now. Dean tells him to be good or they will be back. The boys walk away, talking. Sam points out Andy is a killer after all, but Dean feels he is a hero because he saved Tracy and Dean's lives. Sam bottom lined it, stating Andy wasted somebody. Dean defends Andy, saying he is not a foaming at the mouth psycho but he was pushed into it. Sam says they all were pushed - Anson, Max, even Sam by Jessica's death. Under the right circumstances, everyone is capable of murder and Sam thinks the demon is trying to push them to break them to become killers. Dean smacks Sam, telling him to quit worrying about it as they reach the Impala. Sam brings up earlier, when Andy made Dean tell the truth, that Dean is as scared of this as he is. Dean argues that he was mind controlled, calling for a do-over, and says they just have to keep doing what they are doing to find the Demon and kill it. Ellen calls, and they go the Roadhouse.

Back at the Roadhouse, Ellen tells Jo to get another case of beer to talk with the boys without her there, and even though Jo complains, Ellen makes her go. Ellen presses the boys about the last hunt they were on. Dean hedges, claiming it is a family thing. Ellen disagrees, dropping the stack of papers from Ash on the bar, asking about the demon going after the Gallagher family like it went after their family. Sam says yes. Dean cuts in and says it is none of her business. She tells him to mind his tongue with her, that it is not just their war, it is war. Something big is coming and it is coming fast, and all they have is each other so no secrets or half truths. Sam haltingly reveals about the kids with psychic abilities while Dean is uncomfortable telling Ellen. Sam explains about some of the different abilities including his own, and mentions the demon has plans for them. Ellen pushes about the plans and the psychics, but Sam admits they do not know the plans while Dean claims the psychics are not dangerous. Sam disagrees; some are very dangerous. Ellen wonders how to track them. Dean tells her they all had house fires on the night of the kid's six month birthday, but Sam cuts in and says that is not true. There was no fire in Ansem's past. Ellen recognizes it breaks pattern, which would make the psychics impossible to track. Jo has returned with the beer, but Ellen requests to break out the whiskey instead.

Trivia

Writing the Episode

  • "This story came from 'What would the cool life you'd have if you had mind control?'" reveals consulting producer Ben Edlund. "Sam was so angsty with his psychic abilities - they were such a curse to him - that it'd be really fun to meet one of those children who looked upon their abilities as a blessing," creator Eric Kripke elaborates. "And this kid has this ultimate god-like ability, but all he wants is to live in his van, have a few meals, meet a few girls... and that's it. Talking women into sex is not the noblest endeavor for someone with his power, maybe it's fairly scumbaggy, but still, Andy just came off as goofy and charming to us. If you had superpowers, you probably wouldn't become Superman, you'd cut corners... probably steal some beer."Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 41-42
  • "The initial version of this story was crazy... One guy was walking around having a great time, getting what he wants with this mind control. There there was a deformed twin who was shuttered up in a room somewhere, and they had a telepathic link. The deformed one was more mentally powerful and convinced his twin that he was retarded. The cool thing was at the end the twin who could walk around got so pissed off at the deformed twin that he ate him. Not in the womb like you hear about, but actually just ate him... That got boiled down to a much more manageable story that started to focus on: What do you do with power? What's the real bottom line morality of human life? All that stuff." - Ben EdlundSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 42
  • Composer Jay Gruska tried to make "the sound of the score be somehow less physical and more mind-trippy. There were a few less orchestral devices and a few more synthy, spacey electronica pads in there - more of a sci-fi aspect. That was just to subtly underline that he's got this mind control thing."Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 43

Casting Characters

  • Gabriel Tigerman did a podcast for Winchester Radio That Was Then, This is Now. A few of the highlights of the broadcast pertaining to Simon Said:
    • He thanked everyone in the SPN family that reached out to him and his wife this past year. His wife had been incredibly sick and it meant a lot to him that the fandom cared.
    • He admitted that he auditioned for Neil in CSPwDT, and had high hopes for it. He did not get the part. However, he was called back to audition for Andy. He really liked the character of Andy, but thought he could not be a pothead. Everyone else who auditioned seemed high as a kite, but he did not have that. He had everything else down pat for Andy.
    • He would love to go back and snag the robe and velvet tiger poster. He is also a bit jealous of whomever it was that owned the van with the barbarian queen on the side.
    • He is the first non-Winchester that drove the Impala, but he did not realize what a huge part of the show it was until everyone looked terrified when Jensen handed over the keys. He did not know if it was a dangerous car, or if it could explode - but he only drove it about 5 mph. He was even talking on the cell phone, so it was not even both hands on the wheel. After Simon Said aired, he realized WHOA! What a big deal it was driving the Impala.
    • Andy got to be funny and casual to very serious. It is rare to be able to do a guest stint with so much meat to the character. Although if he was able to play the part of his evil twin, it would be better than just playing Andy.
    • His favorite line - I have an evil twin.

Filming

  • In the "Then" intro, there were several lines that were different from the original airing of Nightmare, and were other takes that were used.
    • Sam (voiceover): Max. Your abilities, they started six, seven months ago, right?
(Original) Sam (voiceover): Your abilities, they started six, seven months ago, right?
    • Sam: And you and I... were chosen.
(Original) Sam: You and I... were chosen.
    • Sam: The thing I don't get is why man. I guess... 'cause we're so alike?
(Original) Sam: I guess - because we're so alike?
    • Dean: Max is nothing like you. Sam, Max is a monster, he's already killed two people, now he's gunning for a third.
(Original) Dean: Dude's nothing like you.
  • The first scene filmed was the scene in which Andy commands Dean to tell the truth. Gabriel did not realize Jensen was so funny, and had to fight to not laugh.Winchester Radio, That Was Then, This is Now
  • Dean is singing "Can't Fight This Feeling" after leaving the bar in the car. Jensen Ackles has perfect pitch and a gorgeous singing voice, making many fans happy to hear him sing at many conventions, but he made the conscious decision that Dean does not.
  • The shot that aired in which Dr. Jennings got hit by the bus was sanitized. "We had a version where when the bus hits the guy, it's blood splatter city, and there's nothing but a tennis shoe flying through the air... Eric thought it might be a little too over the top." - Editor Anthony PinkerSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 42-43
  • "Anytime that [Andy or Webber] gave a direction of his mind control power, we'd double up his cue and give it a delay. We also re-voiced him saying that exact cue, so we'd put it underneath and delay it again. And then we put a little bit of undertone, a little sound effect - just a taste so that people got that he was making a command. I think that it came across really nice." - Supervising sound editor Charlie CrutcherSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 43
  • The dam scene was filmed at Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver, BC. This same dam was also used in Smallville episode "Leech" and the movie The 6th Day.
  • While filming the scene with Chiara Zanni teetering on the edge of the dam, some crew members threw a dummy made to look like her over the edge and she had to watch "herself" bounce off the side of the dam.Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 43
  • Setting someone on fire requires a lot of skill. The actress is sealed in full body silicone with a bit of her likeness. The eyes have to be carefully sealed with acrylic eyes. She had to be enclosed in silicone because it is thermally protective. After being covered in accelerant, she can only take a breath through a small straw, and must hold her breath for fifteen to twenty-five seconds because if she inhales she will burn her lungs. It is almost ironic in how cold she is because the fireproof underwear is soaked in ice-cold fire gel. She is literally shaking, she is so cold. Setting her on fire was a blessed relief, to finally get warm.Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 43
  • There was only one take of Andy shooting Webber. There were big cranes for special shots on the dam. It was really cool. The director was really cool, he just let the actors go. - Gabriel TigermanWinchester Radio That Was Then, This is Now

  • Sam: 'Cause there's a PBR in it for ya.
PBR stands for Pabst Blue Ribbon, a popular American beer.
  • Dean: REO Speedwagon?
Jo: Damn right REO. Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart.
Dean: He sings it from the hair. There's a difference.
REO Speedwagon is an American rock band, formed in 1967, peeking in 1980, with mainstream popularity dissipating in the 1990s. One of their number one hits is "Can't Fight This Feeling" (1985). Aerosmith is an American rock band, that originally formed in 1964.
  • Dean: He full-on Obi-Wanned me. It's mind control, man!
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a character from Star Wars who can use the Force for telekinesis as well as mind control, or Jedi mind tricks.
  • Dean: It looks like he can't work his mojo just by twitching his nose. He's gotta use verbal commands.
Samantha Stephens, from the TV series Bewitched, had to twitch her nose to perform magic.
  • Sam: Dean, you had O.J. convicted before he got out of his white Bronco and you have doubts about this?
Dean: He just doesn't seem like the stone-cold killer type, that's all. You know. And O.J. was guilty.
The O.J. Simpson vs. The People murder case in 1995, in which O.J. Simpson infamously led authorities on a chase for hours on Southern California highways in a white Ford Bronco.
  • Dean: Oh, come on. This is... this is magnificent, that's what this is. Not exactly a serial killer's lair, though. There's no... clown paintings on the walls or... scissors stuck in victims' photos. Like the tiger.
Serial killer John Wayne Gacy painted pictures of clowns while incarcerated.
  • Sam: Hegel, Kant, Wittgenstein? That's pretty heavy reading, Dean.
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Immanuel Kant, and Ludwig Wittgenstein are German philosophers.
  • Dean: Yeah, and uh, and Moby Dick's bong.
Moby Dick is a great white whale.
A bond is a filtration device used for smoking cannabis, tobacco, or other substances.
  • Andy: These aren't the droids you're looking for.
