In the kitchen at Neil's house, Neil is trying to cheer Angela's broken heart over her boyfriend. They are interrupted by Matt pounding at the front door. Matt demands to talk to Angela; Neil blocks him a bit before he shoves his way in, only to find out that Angela has left the house.
Crying, Angela is driving down the road. Matt calls, trying to apologize. Yelling and crying at him, she ends up in a car accident, killing herself.
At Sam's insistence, the brothers are driving out to visit their mother's grave because Sam wants to pay his respects to Mom and Dad. Dean thinks it is irrational because there was no body to bury; all that is there is a headstone planted by her uncle. Dean urges Sam to go by the roadhouse and continue their hunt for the demon. Sam offers to split up and let Dean go, but he is going to the cemetery first. Dean refuses the offer, not wanting to smalltalk with the people at the Roadhouse.
At the cemetery kneeling beside their mom's grave, Sam digs a tiny hole where he buries his father's dog tags, telling her he feels Dad would have have wanted her to have them, before saying, "I love you, Mom." Meanwhile Dean is walking around the cemetery, and notices a dying tree. The tree is inside a circle area of dead grass, with dead flowers, on a grave that belongs to Angela Mason whose funeral was three days ago; all signs of unholy ground. Dean suspects there may be something supernatural at work, and insists that they investigate this case.
Dean and Sam approach Dr. Mason, Angela's father, claiming to be friends of Angela's, offering their condolences. Dean notices an unusual book on ancient Greek mythology, but there are not any clues on a vengeful spirit.
Dean wants to continue digging into the case, but Sam argues that this is simply part of Dean's ongoing refusal to deal with his grief over their father's death. Dean leaves.
Matt watches home videos of himself with Angela. Unbeknownst to him, a plant withers. After he freezes the video on Angela's face, Matt notices that he sees Angela's reflection on the TV. He turns around and screams, before his throat is cut, leaving a blood trail across the TV.
Dean breaks into Angela's apartment to search, and finds the roommate Lindsey brokenhearted over Angela's death. Not only Angela, but Matt's suicide the previous night. He had claimed he had been seeing Angela for several days beforehand.
Dean returns to Sam, who is bored watching porn on TV. Dean tells Sam that Matt slit his own throat last night and he had been seeing Angela everywhere before he died. Sam admits there might be something going on. Dean checked out Matt's apartment only to find a bunch of dead plants, and a dead goldfish, but still is not getting angry spirit vibe from Angela. Dean managed to steal Angela's diary, so they talk with more of Angela's friends.
At Neil's house, Dean and Sam pose as grief counselors from the college. Neil tells them that Matt's death did not occur out of grief, but out of guilt because Angela walked in on Matt having sex with another girl. Their vengeful theory is starting to make more sense, but the only way to be sure Angela is stopped is to burn her bones. Sam is aghast at this - she died last week so her body will be a ripe rotting body, not bones.
At the cemetery they dig up her grave only to discover an empty casket. However, they notice symbols carved on the inside. Dean has seen these kind of symbols before.
Neil heads to his basement, where Angela is sitting on a cot. Standing up, she crosses the room to him, telling him she missed him before kissing him. After a moment, he kisses her back.
Sam and Dean revisit Dr. Mason to question him about the symbols. Dean becomes aggressive and upset with Dr. Mason because they are used for an ancient Greek divination ritual used for necromancy - communicating with the dead, even bringing corpses back to life, full zombie action. He accuses Dr. Mason of using this ritual to bring Angela back to life, but Angela is not Angela anymore - she is vicious, violent, and nasty. Dr. Mason demands they leave, picking up the phone to call the cops. Dean knocks the phone out of his hand, demanding to know where he is hiding Angela. Sam points out to Dean the plants in the house are healthy, therefore Angela has not been there. Dean storms out of the house with Sam giving apologies to Dr. Mason before following Dean out.
Outside Sam once again confronts Dean about the way he is been acting. Dean is scaring the crap out of Sam, because he is on edge, erratic, and tailspinning but refusing to talk about it. Dean says that he can take care of himself. Sam counters that Dean cannot, and he should not have to. Sam begs Dean, that it is killing him. Sam has already lost Dad, Mom, and Jessica - he does not want to lose Dean too. Dean admits that he is being an ass, but that they have got more important things to worry about - a zombie - and they need to figure out how to kill it. Their lives are weird.
Neil is nervous about Matt, but Angela does not want to waste more time on him, having wasted enough time already. Neil is right that Matt did not deserve Angela. Neil is worried Angela got out, but she tells him she did not kill Matt. Neil is also worried that Angela is different, and she concurs - she is different. She realizes Neil is the only one who has ever loved her; he has proved it. She is with him now. Angela kisses him, and they smile.
The boys are at the motel, trying to figure out a way to kill Angela, but Sam says there are hundreds of methods on how to kill the walking dead. They have no idea what is true and what is not. Although there is nothing in common amongst all the methods, a few of them say silver might work. Now they need to find Angela - who brought her back to life? Dean believes that Neil is responsible. Reading from her diary, Dean decides Neil may have had a crush on Angela. Neil is also Dr. Mason's TA and has access to all the same books, and he could have raised her as a zombie.
Neil's house appears to be empty, but Dean takes no chances as he pulls out his 9mm with silver bullets. They check the house, and then the basement where they find a zombie pen, empty. They realize that Angela might be out to kill someone. Dean thinks Angela would want to kill the girl Matt cheated on her with, and that might be her roommate Lindsey because Lindsey was really torn up over Matt's death.
At their apartment, Lindsey is looking at a photo of Angela and Matt when she hears a noise at the front door. Angela attacks Lindsey with a scissors. During the attack, Lindsey kicks Angela to the ground, causing her to fall on the scissors which stab right through her breast. Lindsey is in shock as she turns Angela face up. Angela's eyes open, and she grabs Lindsey by the hair while pulling the scissors out. Before Angela can stab Lindsey, Sam and Dean burst into the room firing two bullets into Angela's back and one into her chest when she turns around. She screams and bolts out the window. Sam comforts Lindsey as Dean chases Angela, to no avail. The boys head back to talk with Neil.
Driving back to college, Dean wants something that can kill Angela, since the silver did something but not enough. Sam reads about nailing the undead back in their grave beds, but Dean wonders how they will get Angela back to the cemetery.
Dean and Sam confront Neil at Dr. Mason's office, knowing everything. They demand to know where he is keeping Angela. Neil claims his house, but Dean realizes from the dead plants she is there. Dean explains they have a plan to return Angela to death, and Dean urges Neil to get out and not to make her mad. After they leave, Angela wants Neil to help her kill them before they kill her. He is repulsed by what is happening to her and how different she is. She realizes he is leaving her so she kills Neil, and pursues the boys to the cemetery.
At the cemetery, Sam and Dean light candles surrounding her grave bed, waiting for her to arrive, not sure this will work. Hearing a noise, Sam pulls his gun and searches for her. Angela finds him, asking him not to hurt her, but he fires a direct shot into her forehead. Sam races back to her grave, with a pissed Angela following. She tackles him and starts trying to kill him as she did to Neil, by breaking his neck. Dean fires into her, throwing her off Sam. He continues to fire, causing her to stumble back and fall directly back into her grave bed. Dean grabs a sword, runs and jumps into the coffin, and with one final stab, stakes her inside her coffin. She dies. Now morning, Sam and Dean finishes reburying Angela's corpse. As they head back to the Impala, Sam congratulates Dean for his plan on luring Angela, but bemoans being bait - he thinks she broke his hand. Dean glances for a second at their mom's grave. Sam offers to stay, but Dean says no.
The boys leave town, but on a lonely mountain road, Dean unexpectedly pulls off to the side of the road. He gets out of the car and sits on the hood; Sam joins him. He apologizes to Sam for the way he has been acting, and for Dad. It is his fault - he made a full recovery and Dad is dead and the Colt is gone. He knows there is a connection, that Dad is dead because of him. He should have stayed dead, and nothing Sam can say can make it right.
