In the kitchen at Neil's house, Neil is trying to cheer Angela's broken heart over her boyfriend. They are interrupted by Matt pounding at the front door. Matt demands to talk to Angela; Neil blocks him a bit before he shoves his way in, only to find out that Angela has left the house.

Crying, Angela is driving down the road. Matt calls, trying to apologize. Yelling and crying at him, she ends up in a car accident, killing herself.

At Sam's insistence, the brothers are driving out to visit their mother's grave because Sam wants to pay his respects to Mom and Dad. Dean thinks it is irrational because there was no body to bury; all that is there is a headstone planted by her uncle. Dean urges Sam to go by the roadhouse and continue their hunt for the demon. Sam offers to split up and let Dean go, but he is going to the cemetery first. Dean refuses the offer, not wanting to smalltalk with the people at the Roadhouse.

At the cemetery kneeling beside their mom's grave, Sam digs a tiny hole where he buries his father's dog tags, telling her he feels Dad would have have wanted her to have them, before saying, "I love you, Mom." Meanwhile Dean is walking around the cemetery, and notices a dying tree. The tree is inside a circle area of dead grass, with dead flowers, on a grave that belongs to Angela Mason whose funeral was three days ago; all signs of unholy ground. Dean suspects there may be something supernatural at work, and insists that they investigate this case.

Dean and Sam approach Dr. Mason, Angela's father, claiming to be friends of Angela's, offering their condolences. Dean notices an unusual book on ancient Greek mythology, but there are not any clues on a vengeful spirit.

Dean wants to continue digging into the case, but Sam argues that this is simply part of Dean's ongoing refusal to deal with his grief over their father's death. Dean leaves.

Matt watches home videos of himself with Angela. Unbeknownst to him, a plant withers. After he freezes the video on Angela's face, Matt notices that he sees Angela's reflection on the TV. He turns around and screams, before his throat is cut, leaving a blood trail across the TV.

Dean breaks into Angela's apartment to search, and finds the roommate Lindsey brokenhearted over Angela's death. Not only Angela, but Matt's suicide the previous night. He had claimed he had been seeing Angela for several days beforehand.

Dean returns to Sam, who is bored watching porn on TV. Dean tells Sam that Matt slit his own throat last night and he had been seeing Angela everywhere before he died. Sam admits there might be something going on. Dean checked out Matt's apartment only to find a bunch of dead plants, and a dead goldfish, but still is not getting angry spirit vibe from Angela. Dean managed to steal Angela's diary, so they talk with more of Angela's friends.

At Neil's house, Dean and Sam pose as grief counselors from the college. Neil tells them that Matt's death did not occur out of grief, but out of guilt because Angela walked in on Matt having sex with another girl. Their vengeful theory is starting to make more sense, but the only way to be sure Angela is stopped is to burn her bones. Sam is aghast at this - she died last week so her body will be a ripe rotting body, not bones.

At the cemetery they dig up her grave only to discover an empty casket. However, they notice symbols carved on the inside. Dean has seen these kind of symbols before.

Neil heads to his basement, where Angela is sitting on a cot. Standing up, she crosses the room to him, telling him she missed him before kissing him. After a moment, he kisses her back.

Sam and Dean revisit Dr. Mason to question him about the symbols. Dean becomes aggressive and upset with Dr. Mason because they are used for an ancient Greek divination ritual used for necromancy - communicating with the dead, even bringing corpses back to life, full zombie action. He accuses Dr. Mason of using this ritual to bring Angela back to life, but Angela is not Angela anymore - she is vicious, violent, and nasty. Dr. Mason demands they leave, picking up the phone to call the cops. Dean knocks the phone out of his hand, demanding to know where he is hiding Angela. Sam points out to Dean the plants in the house are healthy, therefore Angela has not been there. Dean storms out of the house with Sam giving apologies to Dr. Mason before following Dean out.

Outside Sam once again confronts Dean about the way he is been acting. Dean is scaring the crap out of Sam, because he is on edge, erratic, and tailspinning but refusing to talk about it. Dean says that he can take care of himself. Sam counters that Dean cannot, and he should not have to. Sam begs Dean, that it is killing him. Sam has already lost Dad, Mom, and Jessica - he does not want to lose Dean too. Dean admits that he is being an ass, but that they have got more important things to worry about - a zombie - and they need to figure out how to kill it. Their lives are weird.

Neil is nervous about Matt, but Angela does not want to waste more time on him, having wasted enough time already. Neil is right that Matt did not deserve Angela. Neil is worried Angela got out, but she tells him she did not kill Matt. Neil is also worried that Angela is different, and she concurs - she is different. She realizes Neil is the only one who has ever loved her; he has proved it. She is with him now. Angela kisses him, and they smile.

The boys are at the motel, trying to figure out a way to kill Angela, but Sam says there are hundreds of methods on how to kill the walking dead. They have no idea what is true and what is not. Although there is nothing in common amongst all the methods, a few of them say silver might work. Now they need to find Angela - who brought her back to life? Dean believes that Neil is responsible. Reading from her diary, Dean decides Neil may have had a crush on Angela. Neil is also Dr. Mason's TA and has access to all the same books, and he could have raised her as a zombie.

Neil's house appears to be empty, but Dean takes no chances as he pulls out his 9mm with silver bullets. They check the house, and then the basement where they find a zombie pen, empty. They realize that Angela might be out to kill someone. Dean thinks Angela would want to kill the girl Matt cheated on her with, and that might be her roommate Lindsey because Lindsey was really torn up over Matt's death.

At their apartment, Lindsey is looking at a photo of Angela and Matt when she hears a noise at the front door. Angela attacks Lindsey with a scissors. During the attack, Lindsey kicks Angela to the ground, causing her to fall on the scissors which stab right through her breast. Lindsey is in shock as she turns Angela face up. Angela's eyes open, and she grabs Lindsey by the hair while pulling the scissors out. Before Angela can stab Lindsey, Sam and Dean burst into the room firing two bullets into Angela's back and one into her chest when she turns around. She screams and bolts out the window. Sam comforts Lindsey as Dean chases Angela, to no avail. The boys head back to talk with Neil.

Driving back to college, Dean wants something that can kill Angela, since the silver did something but not enough. Sam reads about nailing the undead back in their grave beds, but Dean wonders how they will get Angela back to the cemetery.

Dean and Sam confront Neil at Dr. Mason's office, knowing everything. They demand to know where he is keeping Angela. Neil claims his house, but Dean realizes from the dead plants she is there. Dean explains they have a plan to return Angela to death, and Dean urges Neil to get out and not to make her mad. After they leave, Angela wants Neil to help her kill them before they kill her. He is repulsed by what is happening to her and how different she is. She realizes he is leaving her so she kills Neil, and pursues the boys to the cemetery.

At the cemetery, Sam and Dean light candles surrounding her grave bed, waiting for her to arrive, not sure this will work. Hearing a noise, Sam pulls his gun and searches for her. Angela finds him, asking him not to hurt her, but he fires a direct shot into her forehead. Sam races back to her grave, with a pissed Angela following. She tackles him and starts trying to kill him as she did to Neil, by breaking his neck. Dean fires into her, throwing her off Sam. He continues to fire, causing her to stumble back and fall directly back into her grave bed. Dean grabs a sword, runs and jumps into the coffin, and with one final stab, stakes her inside her coffin. She dies. Now morning, Sam and Dean finishes reburying Angela's corpse. As they head back to the Impala, Sam congratulates Dean for his plan on luring Angela, but bemoans being bait - he thinks she broke his hand. Dean glances for a second at their mom's grave. Sam offers to stay, but Dean says no.

The boys leave town, but on a lonely mountain road, Dean unexpectedly pulls off to the side of the road. He gets out of the car and sits on the hood; Sam joins him. He apologizes to Sam for the way he has been acting, and for Dad. It is his fault - he made a full recovery and Dad is dead and the Colt is gone. He knows there is a connection, that Dad is dead because of him. He should have stayed dead, and nothing Sam can say can make it right.

Trivia

Writing the Episode

  • "We were looking for the right story to explore the aftermath of John Winchester's death - how differently Sam and Dean cope with loss, and the conflict that creates between them. Revisiting Mary's grave seemed like the perfect way, because her death was the catalyst for all of this, for everything they've become. They're been on this revenge mission ever since, so in a way they've never properly grieved or healed from that loss. And now it's all about avenging dad. They're just repeating the same pattern. And that's Sam's point of view in all this. 'We need to just stop and deal with this.' But all Dean knows how to do - the only way he knows how to keep going - is to kill whatever's in front of him." - Story Editor Raelle TuckerSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 34, 36
  • "I approached Angela, the zombie, as a victim. Her story is tragic - she was hurt and betrayed when she died, now this gross unnatural creature she's become is carrying that rage, unable to let it go, unable to control herself. Much like Dean. That parallel is what made her the right villain for this episode." - Story Editor Raelle TuckerSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 36
  • "Lingering humanity is the crucial difference between Supernatural's zombie and the slow moving ones from the Romero flicks [such as Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead] or the fast moving ones from 28 Days Later. If anything I would say the closest cousins of our zombie were the zombies from Pet Sematary, where they come back and they know a little something about you, but they're much more dangerous and homicidal." - Eric KripkeSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 36
  • "We were going for a bit of innocence," head costume designer Diane Widas says of the zombie Angela. That innocence makes zombies "more manipulative," Eric Kripke informs. "They act in many ways like that same person before they died, which makes them harder to kill because they can play with your affection." And that makes them "more dangerous." Kripke continues, because they are actually "very different from who they were while alive."Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 39

Casting Characters

  • On IMDb, Summer Glau was originally credited for Angela. Unfortunately, she was unable to do the part because of scheduling conflicts. It has since been corrected to Tamara Feldman. The mistake has erroneously been repeated on TV listings.

Filming

  • There is a line in the first part that did not air with Wendigo. Dean: "Dad wants us to pick up where he left off." The original line was "I think he wants us to pick up where he left off."
  • The crew of Supernatural "inherited" the dead tree seen in the cemetery from The Exorcism of Emily Rose production. And this same haunting tree featured prominently in the memorable episode Scarecrow.Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 34
  • "I liked the choice to make them as close to a real person as you can," remarks key makeup artist Shannon Coppin. "We tend to do that on this show; we keep things as believable as possible."Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 39
  • Rot spread out from the forehead, which was a neat special effect after Angela got shot in the head. A small piece was rigged with compressed air to blast it out, showing the wound.Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 37
  • "Special effects makeup had a rig mounted to her chest with some makeup hiding the big ugly wound, and it was just the handles of the scissors that she'd take from her chest. The blades were all CG [computer generated], and we hand-animated the blood that broke off." - Visual effects coordinator Ivan HaydenSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 37
  • Jensen is a total athlete, and he will do the stunt perfect the first time. However, it was Tamara Feldman's first bullet where she had to pause long enough for the camera to read it, then fall back into the grave. Between the two of them, they did the shot in one take. Kim Manners was over the moon.
  • Getting ready for the shot at the graveyard to fill in Angela's grave, Jared was complaining about how tight his clothes were fitting, since he was trying to gain weight for a certain part. Action was called, Jared swung the shovel and his pants ripped. Manners kept the cameras rolling and Jared is running around the graveyard like a madman in his underwear as Jensen is laughing hysterically. This shot made it to the gag reel.
  • At the end of the episode, Sam complains "I think she broke my hand" after his fight with Angela. This was included in the script after Jared Padalecki actually broke his wrist filming the previous episode. Because of this Sam is seen wearing a cast on his right arm in the episodes from Simon Said until Playthings.

Pop Culture

  • Sam: Maybe the groundskeeper went a little aggro with the pesticide.
"Aggro" is a common slang term originating in Britain and widely used in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. It can be used to describe aggressive behavior, or a situation that is a source of irritation to the speaker (e.g. "These roadworks are causing more aggro than they're worth," he muttered.) Sam probably picked up this term from association with tourists while on the road, as the term is not widely used in the States.
Could also possibly be a reference to computer gaming: the term "aggro" is used as a measure of how much hate/aggression a computer-generated foe holds for a player. The more aggro something has for you, the more likely it is to attack you.
  • Lindsey: He said that he SAW her. As in, an acid trip or something.
An acid trip refers to psychedelic experiences brought on by the use of LSD. A psychedelic experience is a temporary altered state of consciousness induced by the consumption of psychedelic drugs such as LSD, mescaline, psilocybin mushrooms, salvia divinorum, cannabis, and DMT.
  • Dean: What you brought back isn't even your daughter anymore. These things are vicious, they're violent, they're so nasty they rot the ground around them. I mean, come on, haven't you seen Pet Sematary?
A reference to the Stephen King novel and film, Pet Sematary, in which a grieving father buries his young son's body in an ancient Indian burial ground and it comes back as a zombie.
  • Dean: We can't just waste it with a head shot?
Sam: Dude. You've been watching way too many Romero flicks.
This is a reference to George A. Romero, director of many zombie films most famously, Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. Romero created many of the modern zombie rules, which include only being able to stop them with a head shot.
  • Dean: Well, you've got your journal, I've got mine. 'Neil's a real shoulder to cry on, he so understands what I'm going through with Matt.' There's more in here where that came from. It's got Unrequited Duckie love written all over it.
A reference to the movie Pretty in Pink where the character Duckie pines for his best friend Andie.
  • Dean: Nah, I think she went out to rent Beaches.
    Beaches is a chick-flick movie from 1988.
  • Angela: Hi Lindsey, I'm home!
Likely a reference to Desi Arnaz's famous line "Lucy! I'm home!" from the 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy.
