Dean Winchester is a human and hunter, formerly a demon, a member of the Men of Letters with his brother Sam and one of the lead protagonists, also a temporary antagonist, in Supernatural. He and his brother are members of the Winchester and Campbell families, and Dean is also the destined vessel of the archangel Michael. He and Sam are also the surrogate sons of Bobby Singer. Dean is best friends with the angel Castiel, close friends with the late prophet Kevin Tran and reluctant ally of Crowley. Dean has an ex-girlfriend, Lisa Braeden, who he lived with for a year when Sam was in Hell. She has a child named Ben, who Dean acted as a father for. Dean is also the former apprentice of Alastair. Both Dean and Sam were raised in the hunting life by their father after the demon Azazel killed their mother. Dean's main role in the series is being the self-appointed guardian of Sam and often going to extreme lengths to protect him regardless of personal cost. Often in these occurrences, Dean finds himself the center of a much larger picture. When he was killed by Metatron whilst using the Mark of Cain, Dean returned as a demon and a Knight of Hell loyal only to himself. He was then cured by his brother using purified blood.

  • Jensen made the conscious thought to start having a gravelly voice for Dean, because he was emulating his dad John, who also has a gravelly voice.Supernatural Paleyfest 2011, interview by Hollywookiee.com
  • "These boys live out of the back of their car, so they've got well-used looking items of clothing, so it's not just off the rack a lot of times. You might get your heart set on something specific, but we might need eight or ten of them because they are major action heroes." - Diane WidasSupernatural The Official Companion Season 1, p. 145
  • "For Jensen, he has the journal, so we build a pocket in all of his coats so that he has a place to put that. The boys do have a lot of different clothes. It's like the magic trunk because if they really were what they were they probably would have two shirts and one coat and one pair of jeans, but we obviously have to keep it more interesting for them and for us as an audience. We try not to worry about how many clothes they have in their trunk!" - Diane WidasSupernatural The Official Companion Season 1, p. 145
  • At one time, several of the cell phone numbers seen in the show were actually active. Jensen Ackles read the answering machine messages as if Dean left it.
  • Jensen and Jared chew gum on set during shooting. During a convention between seasons 13 and 14, Jensen announced that anytime Dean or Sam is shown in a scene, in any of the seasons, they have gum hidden in their mouth; it is generally in the roof of their mouth, behind their front teeth. Jensen's 10th grade English teacher claimed to know when anyone was trying to hide gum, and he does it to prove he can.
  • Kim Manners said Jensen would direct one day. He offered to be there for Jensen, but Kim died before Jensen directed.
  • The first time Jensen directed, he forgot to memorize his lines. He had asked for very little Dean in the script, so he could focus on directing and the writers obliged. His directorial debut was Weekend at Bobby's.
  • Season 6 was incredibly hard for Jensen as an actor to play opposite Jared's soulless Sam. He had built up this incredible relationship with Sam over 5 years at this point, and suddenly Jared was playing something completely different than who Jensen had been used to working with. Now that everything is back to normal (in season 7) he is more comfortable.Supernatural Paleyfest 2011, interview by Hollywookiee.com
  • Jensen Ackles agrees with Jared Padalecki when asked at the start of season 12 by Entertainment Weekly what episode he considers his favorite. Jared mentioned a specific scene in Baby - where the brothers talk after Sam wakes up in the back seat - and Jensen pulled it up for them to both watch on his phone. "After we did that scene, he and I looked at each other like, 'We should just do that more often.'"EW
  • Don't be surprised if you see Jensen Ackles playing a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after Supernatural finishes. He was second in line to play Steve Rogers in Captain America, before the role went to Chris Evans. Marvel then offered Ackles the part of Hawkeye in The Avengers. He had to pass due to Supernatural commitments.

  • The interesting thing that Kripke did with the first several seasons is he flipped character motivations from season to season. With the first season, you had Dean as the motivating factor: he was really pushed by his father, dragging Sam along against his will. Then as Dad dies, the whole thing is flipped upside down. Now Dean is like, "I don't want to do this anymore." Dad was his motivating factor in life and [after] he lost him, it was a devastating blow and Dean just wanted to hang it up. And Sam was the one who was like, "no, we're going to go find answers to this. I have to figure out how I play into this," and Dean went along with him because he couldn't let his little brother go it alone. - Jensen AcklesSupernatural Oral History
  • Because we had a plan to bring Sam back, we got to write the super-emotional scene with his brother that we knew that Jensen would knock out of the part, and both of them knocked it out of the park. - Sera GambleSupernatural Oral History
  • Supernatural works a lot around the concept of brotherhood - and relations as such. Brothers are not only defined by make children being born to the same parents. Brotherhood is so much more - as family is more than just blood. Bobby's wise words attest to that: "Family doesn't end with blood." Brotherhood and family is not physical relations, it's more a spiritual feeling of connection between people who become close. Dean and Cas were as much brothers in that sense as Dean and Sam were. Unfortunately many misunderstand this kind of close relation as an expression of sexuality - that's the basis of the whole shipping thing. But sexuality is not spiritual - it's physical. Friendship is spiritual - it's a kind of love that doesn't expect any physical outlets. Love can be both physical and spiritual - that's why the Greek had two words for it - eros and agape. Eros is sexuality, agape is asexual love. - Marianne Søndergaard on Supernatural - the good stuff
  • The Winchesters were originally named Harrison. The reason Harrison was changed to Winchester was that there was an actual person named Sam Harrison in Kansas.
  • Originally, Dean was to be covered in tattoos. However, the budget constraints for Season 1 did not allow for it.
  • At one time, several of the cell phone numbers seen in the show were actually active. Initially if you called 866-907-3235, you'd hear Jensen Ackles reading the message, "This is Dean Winchester. If this is an emergency, please leave a message. If you are calling about 11-2-83, page me with your coordinates." (That was the date of Mary Winchester's death.) After a time Dean's message was changed to, "Dad? We really need to hear from you. Leave me a message, text me, check your jwinchester1246 email. Anything. We have new info." That email address worked too.
  • It does not say Federal Bureau of Investigation on Dean and Sam's FBI badges. That's because even if it's just being made for a prop on a TV show, it is illegal to make a fake FBI badge. Instead they read: The Federal Bureau of Justice, United States Department of Investigation.
  • Dean has killed the most main antagonists in the series, with four. He killed Azazel, Eve, Dick Roman and Abaddon. He's also killed secondary antagonists, Ruby and Zachariah.
  • Dean's leather jacket, that he inherited from John, is nearly identical to the one worn by the title character of the movie Taffin (Played by Pierce Brosnan).
  • It is a common saying on the set of SPN - no joke is too low. So, jokingly, Jensen ate the food in front of him on the set of 1.14 Nightmare - cocktail wieners. He asked Robyn afterwards if it was any good, and she said they were fresh, but they were not supposed to be eaten because they were only props. He noticed - they did not taste right. That one joke caused Dean to be a food junkie for the rest of the show.
  • Dean has time traveled more than any other character. Going back in time 4 times (To the 1800s, the 1940s and the 1970s twice) and going forward once (to an Alternate 2014). If one counts return trips, Dean has time traveled ten times.
  • Dean aged 50 years in The Curious Case of Dean Winchester by losing a poker game. He regained his original age by Sam cashing in his year chips. Dean also became younger in About a Boy, but was also returned to his original age. Both were cases of witchcraft.
  • Dean seems to be rather clueless about electronic pop culture, evidenced by him not knowing what an Xbox or the game of Minecraft is, and believing MySpace to be a porn site. However, he seems to have gotten better over time as he now has a phone with apps, something that shocked Sam.
  • Dean is a big movie buff and quotes them frequently. Sam stated that Dean knows all of Clint Eastwoods movies line for line, especially the "the monkey movies." He is also a huge fan of Chuck Norris. He also claims "Untouchables" is one of his favorite movies.
  • Dean suffers from Pteromerhanophobia (fear of flying).
  • Dean is very good at flirting, proved in notable episodes also he was very impressive in The Girl with the Dungeons and the Dragon Tattoo where he coached a lesbian, i.e., Charlie Bradbury into flirting with a male security guard.

  • Dean has been to the most number of different realms, Heaven, Hell, Avalon, and Purgatory. He is the first human to ever enter Purgatory, and possibly the only one who has come back from Avalon.
  • When playing Rock, Paper, Scissors, Dean always loses, execpt when he is in an alternate universe. However, he did win a game legitimately for the first time in Love Hurts. Shocked both brothers, before Sam ignored Dean winning. Dean's expression and attitude were priceless.
  • Dean's Impala was a gift from John. He is so protective of it because it was his dad's car, home for most of his life, and his father entrusted his prize car to his oldest son.
  • He is allergic to cats as evidenced in the episode Man's Best Friend With Benefits. He also strongly dislikes dogs for some unknown reason though he develops a bond with the Colonel due to the Animal-Human Mind Meld he underwent to talk to him in Dog Dean Afternoon. He also briefly had some dog-like mannerisms as a result of the ritual for about a day.
  • Dean is considered an "honorary dog" by at least the Colonel. As a result the Colonel tried to tell him what a dog's true role is as it is not man's best friend. However, the spell he was using wore off before Dean could find out however.
  • A running gag on the show is that Dean never gets his pie. Although he seems to have eaten some in Hammer of the Gods and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. However, in Hammer it came from a group of pagan gods and in Dead Men it came from a zombie.
  • Dean unknowingly admits to watching Oprah, something that surprised Sam. (Bugs)
  • Dean's favorite food (with the exception of pie) is the bacon cheeseburger which he apparently eats every day and, in his heart, he believes to be as good as sex.
  • Two of Dean's favorite weapons seem to be a brushed stainless steel Colt 1911 with ivory grips and a double barrel sawed-off shotgun.
  • Dean has also shown he is quite good at cooking as seen in Trial And Error.
  • In Changing Channels, Dean reveals that he hates procedural cop shows because they are all the same. He also thinks that only "no talent douchebags" wear sunglasses at night. He later tells Sam that he thinks that only blind people and douchebags wear sunglasses inside.
  • For a long time, of all the supernatural beings and creatures that he has met and hunted, Death is the only being that Dean is afraid of, and has the greatest respect for. However, Death is now dead. After Dean meets Amara, the Darkness, he also is afraid of her and the bond between them, but works to try to defeat her. Dean has respect for God/Chuck, but is never afraid of him.
  • He is into hentai (anime porn). Sam even tells Jody that Dean is an "animated Japanese erotica chick". (Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox)
  • So far, Dean, along with Cain, is the one of two known characters to become a demon, specifically a Knight of Hell, without going through hundreds of years of torture in Hell.
  • Dean's favorite song is a tie between Led Zeppelin's "Ramblin' On" and "Traveling Riverside Blues."
  • Dean, unlike Sam, Bobby, John, or Castiel, has never been possessed by a demon or angel, though he came close to becoming a demon while in Hell. Dean is possessing his own body while a demon, although he is now a cured demon.
  • Through his behavior in the early episodes of Season 10, it is evident that Dean considers himself to be superior to Crowley, who is the King of Hell, and may thus be the strongest demon.
  • Dean is one of only two people known to be cured of being a demon. Although if he died while he still had the Mark of Cain, he would once again become a demon, a Knight of Hell. The Mark of Cain was removed at the end of Season 10.
  • His driver's license reads:
    1481 Kripke Ave.
    Lawrence, KS 66945
