"I didn't have as much information [about Jo's personality] before 'No Exit', so I just wanted to make her somewhat confident and cool. When I was in the army I was holding my gun and feeling all dangerous and badass. It's an attitude, it's a different kind of walk, and the way you hold yourself, the way you look at things. I tried to put that in there because she didn't say much." - Alona TalSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 138
The writers spent so much time with a father-son relationship dynamic, that they wanted to explore a mother-daughter dynamic, which is where Ellen and Jo came about.Supernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 14
"They were all fun. When you work with Jared and Jensen, they are the most hilarious duo. Together, they share a brain or something." The actors are notorious for their pranks, but they didn't pull any on Alona. "I think they were afraid I was gonna cry," she laughs. "They don't work with girls much." - Alona TalSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 138-139
"Jo was originally introduced to be a love interest for Dean... We wrote her as an innocent girl who wanted to be a hunter, and that gave her this energy of leaping before she looked and doing all these things that Dean wouldn't necessarily spark to. She was just so enthusiatic and so girl-next-door about her approach to hunting. In hindsight, Dean wouldn't be attracted to that character... He'd be attracted to someone who walked in the door, slaughtered everybody and walked out and then he would say, 'Who's that?' Alona played it beautifully, but the character wasn't playing as the love interest, she was playing as the little sister." - Eric KripkeSupernatural The Official Companion Season 2, p. 15
The actress Alona Tal thought of Jo as "sort of like Dean but a girl, and I tried to have fun with it." - Sequential Tart: Super Women: Alona Tal Supernatural's Jo Harvelle
There was a Jo's Blog on the Hunter's Blog official website from Warner Brothers, which redirected you to CW Supernatural page. It ceased being updated in early May 2007, after 2.18 Hollywood Babylon aired. It has since been removed from the websites. There were diary entries from Ho detailing her desire to become a hunter, and a few pictures from her Hunter's Blog. She quit it June 16, 2006, frustrated with herself because there's nothing new to say. She hopes to go on a solo hunt, and continue it after that.
According to the original version of Jo's Blog, she knew John Winchester as early as 1994 and called him "Uncle John".
